A grammar-obsessed squirrel. A legendary potion shop. And secrets lurking in every corner.

Taliana is after a secret. Problem is, she’s not the only one.

Three years of meticulous studies have paid off, and Taliana—an eager, detail-obsessed squirrel—has been selected as an apprentice to the most legendary potions master in the capital: Ilyan the Estimable.

Ilyan has a fabled secret, one that makes his potions longer lasting, with fewer side-effects, than any of his competitors. Taliana is determined to find out what that secret is—at any cost.

Unfortunately, so is a team of elite, fire-wielding mercenaries.

Part of the Zenitha Saga series.

As apprentice to the great aquamancer Ilyan, Taliana the snippen (a large squirrel-like creature) has set two goals. First, she wants to learn his secrets, and might succeed. But her second aim of eradicating bad grammar is fixed for failure, probably because Ilyan refuses to let her repaint his sign that says “Ilyan’s Aquamancery Potions, Tinctures, & Elisirs.” Ultimately the apprentice must discover her role and the purpose of ethical aquamancers who brew potions to help others. Jeremy P. Madsen’s novelette The Aquamancer’s Secret introduces The Zenitha Saga but can also stand alone. Madsen infuses whimsy into this cozy fantasy set in a potion shop that blends low stakes with gentle wisdom.

Best for: Families and adult fans of cozy fantasy with light adventure.

Discern: A few fights with light violence.
