Bo and Mr. Quillen are sheriffs watching over the animals of Riverdell, and today they must crack the mystery of Mrs. Hen’s lost young’un. Andrew K. Johnston’s debut story The Lost Chick lopes out of the barnyard gates to begin the new Adventures of Bo and Mr. Quillery series. Leo Hartas’s charming grayscale illustrations in each chapter complement the story and introduce each character. With apparent inspiration by Hank the Cowdog, yet seeming aspiration for grander wholesome adventures, Bo and Mr. Quillen vanquish western varmints and encourage heroism in this great talking-animals adventure right on the border of early readers and middle grade.

Best for: Early or middle-grade readers who love animal stories.

Discern: Some name-calling between the hero and villain, comedic fights.
