This time the Doctor will be clad in a a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt and black Dr Marten shoes. The look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.

  1. Adam Graham says:

The red seems to call to mind a lot of third doctor outfits I’ve seen.  I don’t like the lack of a tie and closed top button. Not only is the tie traditional for every doctor except the 5th, 9th and the War Doctor, it just doesn’t look right. This is Doctor Who not Monk.

  2. Julie D says:

The red lining is a very strong echo of Three’s cape–points there, but I’m less excited about it because it looks…ordinary.  The first two Doctors had formal that was slightly ajar, but starting with Three and culminating with Six, the costume emphasized alien tastes.
After pulling up a picture, I decided to rank the Doctors based on clothing eccentricity (primary costumes), from least to greatest.

    Nine
    Two
    One
    Ten
    Three
    Eight
    Eleven (bonus points for hats)
    Four
    Five
    Seven
    Six

Not that I’d recommend a return to Joseph’s nightmare of a coat, but the Doctor should dress at least slightly anchronistically.
    My twelve-year-old brother’s comments

No bow tie. No tie at all. The red looks like a vampire. It just doesn’t look like the Doctor.

I hope he’ll introduce some accessories throughout the season. I mean, the fez was on Matt’s head for less than ten minutes and it’s a meme.
