Will the horn of Helm Hammerhand sound in cinemas again? Deadline reports a startling creative film choice that could go so wrong or so right:

Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings: Return of the King scribe Philippa Boyens will be a consultant on the new project directed by Kenji Kamiyama. The pic is being fast-tracked with animation work done by Sola Entertainment. Voice casting is currently underway.

So—what’s it about? Prepare for gasps and fears, or else chills and anticipation:

The War of the Rohirrim focuses on a character from the book’s appendix, the mighty King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand, and a legendary battle which helped shaped Middle-earth heading into LOTR. The anime pic will expand the untold story behind the fortress of Helm’s Deep, delving into the life and bloodsoaked times of Hammerhand.

They don’t know if original film trilogy director-writer Peter Jackson and writer Fran Walsh will help with this project.

But yes, their The Lord of the Rings colleague Phillipa Boyens will be a consultant.

Deadline lists no anticipated release date, but does say the project is being “fast-tracked.” Read their complete article, complete with statements from New Line producers.
