Why Do Your Kids Need Fantastical Stories for God’s Glory?
Do your children or teens have the strange superpower of speeding through dozens more fantastical books than you could ever hope to read first? In this session, Lorehaven.com publisher E. Stephen Burnett, coauthor of The Pop Culture Parent, explores the biblical and practical reasons we actually need fantasy, sci-fi, and other stories that offer many idols yet also graces. In light of the gospel, biblical Christian parents can explore fantastical stories for God’s glory, and apply these stories to the real world our Author, Jesus Christ, has called us to serve.

Thriving with Stories: Helping Students Engage with Literature
How do we help our students retain what they read and engage with stories to learn more about themselves and their world? Join James R. Hannibal as he teaches you the “story beats” common to every story and the questions your students need to ask before and after they read. Understanding the story beats, recognizing the stages of a story, and asking the right questions helps students relate to literature assignments (and to you) on a deeper level. Focusing their critical thinking in this way increases understanding for better reading comprehension and more thoughtful analysis
- Friday, April 1, 2–2:50 p.m.
- Kilimanjaro 4 classroom
About Lorehaven guest authors
E. Stephen Burnett (The Pop Culture Parent, Lorehaven)
E. Stephen Burnett creates sci-fi and fantasy novels as well as nonfiction, exploring fantastical stories for God’s glory as publisher of Lorehaven.com and cohost of the Fantastical Truth podcast. As the oldest of six, he enjoys connecting with his homeschool roots by speaking at conferences for Christian families and creators. Stephen is coauthor of The Pop Culture Parent: Helping Kids Engage Their World for Christ from New Growth Press (2020, with Ted Turnau and Dr. Jared Moore). Stephen and his wife, Lacy, live in the Austin area, where they help with foster parenting and serve as members of Southern Hills Baptist Church.
Jamie S. Foley (Emberhawk, Silverblood)
Jamie Foley is director of marketing at Enclave Publishing, a leading publisher of Christian speculative fiction. She’s also the founder of Fayette Press, an alliance of clean fantasy and sci-fi authors, as well as author of The Sentinel Trilogy and The Katrosi Revolution. Jamie loves strategy games, home-grown berries, and Texas winters. She’s terrified of plot holes and red wasps. Her husband is her manly cowboy astronaut muse. They live between Austin, Texas and their family cattle ranch, where their hyperactive spawnling and wolfpack can run free.
James R. Hannibal (Wolf Soldier, Lightraiders)
Former stealth pilot James R. Hannibal is no stranger to secrets and adventure. He has been shot at, locked up by surface to air missiles, has hunted insurgents with drones, and was once chased by an armed terrorist down a winding German road. James is the Carol Award–winning author of the Clandestine Service series and a three-time winner of the Silver Falchion Award for Juvenile Fiction for his Section 13 series. He also stewards the discipleship learning system game formerly known as DragonRaid, now relaunched as LightRaiders.
