Arriving on the planet Fierra, Treet discovers a civilization in decline, fragmented by millennia of mistrust and hatred. To survive, he and his odd assortment of companions must unscramble the mysteries around them … before time runs out for the settlement.
It wasn’t until years after I read this book and its sequel that I played Sid Meyer’s Alpha Centauri (Civilization in Space), and realized that these books are fanfiction of it. The two factions of Empyrion are identifiable factions from the game. The planet is the same planet as the game, complete with pink xenofungus. There are people who use Psi powers, but it’s never explained if the Psi is good or evil. The entire first book consists of explaining the intricate caste system of the people inside Dome. It’s kind of a slog.
Yeah, definitely a book to read. Once.
Hey, Kessie — Does the fact that Empyrion was first published in 1985 — 13 or more years BEFORE Sid Meyers came up with AlphaC make any difference to you? It looks like Sid may have been influenced by Lawhead and not the other way around, don’t you think?
